Yes it can, but it Really Pays to know when, and when not, to use it. Definitely a method for the knowledgeable, or for Tim "Support your local ER" Taylor. Even using this circuit as example; if VW hadn't in a rare fit of caution decided that 250 (or 450) watt inductive load was maybe a bit much to be switching directly, you could be holding a red hot paper clip in your hand, not to mention the slight case of arc blindness.
