how funny. I wasn't going to be a whatever and say .. 'socket size for the hex head, or thread size ?? '

most people correctly guessed the poster meant hex socket size. now someone has thoughtfully gone to the trouble to say the thread sizes.

if you ask what size a bolt is .. you really have to say if you are asking what size thread it is, or what size wrench or socket goes on it.

exhaust flange bolts are 8mm bolts or studs , for example... that's 8mm thread with usually either a 12 or 13mm hex head or nut. . M8 x 1.25mm specifically .. and they can have different size hex heads or nuts.

I'd say Mr Zimmerman answered the question more correctly, as it was written.

but why aim for clarity in communication anyway ? it's more fun when people have to guess what is being asked.
