Based on a note I saw in response to a post by Dennis.. sounds like you are thinking of having your guy go through it . and once apart where you can count the R & P teeth, it will be easy to tell.

other than that , by trans code number I would think. or ...hmmm.....'probably' such information is not in the VIN.

if manual trans .. I can describe how to turn shafts and count turns.. won't work on an automatic I don't think.

sure would be nice to see someone take it apart for a real evaluation . scott
