Phil, IIRC, the jack base is designed so that it can 'rock' to the optimum position as you lift the van. When you insert the jack with the base slightly pushed under the lifting head towards the center of the van. As you lift, the main shafts should start to become more vertical as the vehicle is raised at an arc. If you stabilize the bottom, the jack base will tend to push (slide) out from under the vehicle as you lift.
