This sounds like some real lack of maintenance here. It probably has alloy
wheels with enough openings that the pads can be checked just by just
looking in. And we wonder why some states see the need for some type of
inspection program.
But more seriously, the pads also act as insulators. When they get real thin
the heat from braking goes right into the calipers heating (or boiling) the
fluid and damaging the seals. The calipers should be carefully inspected but
I would bet they will soon fail. If that was my customers car I would be
suggesting replacement.

Metal on metal. Shop opened the bleeder when pushing the pistons back.
Guess they left them open too long and drained the master. He's planning to
head into Knoxville tommorow in hope of finding someone open. There was a
recommended shop in the other direction but not open Saturday.
