I remember when $ 2.00 would buy 8 gallons of regular, in 1968 in Denver. and that would provide an all day trip to tops of mountain passes on forest roads and back. for two bucks ! I like to measure it in miles per dollar too.. if we are getting 20 mpg .. at $ 4 per gal ... that means 100 miles takes 5 gallons. 5 gallons costs 20 bucks.. for ....only 5 miles per dollar. At my local southern oregon price of $ 4.25 I must be getting only about 4 1/2 miles per dollar sometimes. and with the common 'cars' around here .. big pick-up trucks ..they might be getting 3 miles per dollar. Ouch.
