From experience the air cooled engines need head temperature monitoring more than oil temperature. Oil temperature rise from excessive load can be too far after the fact that the valves started to burn and the seats are getting ready to fall out of the heads or even that the pistons started to melt. Then my bad . because with an air-cooled engine you wouldn't really have a way to know oil temp ... unless with a gauge .. or with an IR temp gun .. so for an air-cooled engine ..yes, an oil temp gauge would help a lot, there not being any temperature indication in the cockpit on air-cooled VW engines , none of any kind. Now those air-cooled engines ..they DO need an oil temp gauge ! |
