Sound advice, o magus. Us'n Jovian figgers are immune to flattery
[our nose is just fine, thank you, Mister Geppetto], but criticism
gets right up our nose.

Oh aye. Sometimes just enough to a) look as though he knows a lot
more than he does, or b) be dangerous. Sometimes both. He processes
very rapidly, which is a three-edged sword.

Fair number of sailors on the list. Not surprising really. If you
think about it, a Westy is a good deal like a 25-foot cruising sloop
that doesn't need bridges to lift for it unless the top is up.
However, I do believe I can claim one unique distinction. I'm pretty
sure I'm the only person in Known Space who a) brought a 32-foot
sloop to a Vanagon/Bus get-together, b) on the eleventh of September,
2001, and c) [I still can't believe I actually did this] took a bunch
of them for a ride and decided to show them a rock, specifically the
*only* rock, right in the middle of a hurricane hole called The
Basin, and forgot that this landlocked little bubble of heaven might
as well be a plankton farm, and the visibility is about three
inches. Heck, I'd gone swimming for that same rock years before and
bumped my head on it. So they're all looking over the bow [we'd
better humor the poor sod, who knows what he'll do...], she's
probably down by the head a good eight inches...we found the rock all
right. Just a tap, but 20 years before my father had actually hit
something in the same place under the forefoot, and the pirates at
the yard he went to "repaired" it with two layers of glass cloth and
about three pounds of Bondo. Which naturally popped off and started
leaking again. And rather than laughing themselves sick, as they
would have been reasonably entitled to do, my guests were the
absolute soul of helpful courtesy. Vanagon people are great.

Vanity. Pure vanity. Seriously, if I'm on the list a lot it means
I'm in an intermediate state between a) curled up in a tight ball on
the couch and b) actually having a life of some sort (right now I'm
on the rising side of that curve). I have a number of good friends
here, some of whom I've actually met. I reckon we're pretty much even.
Yours,
David
