Bryan, not sure this is going to work.  The gasoline will probably just
melt the silicon and you will have contamination in your fuel tank and
still have a leak.  The key is having a smooth, even surface for the
filler neck to seal to the seal itself.  If there is some rust or
pitting on the filler neck where the seal touches it that could be
causing the leak.  Also when installing the seal I always lubricate the
seal itself with petroleum jelly.  This allows the parts to slide
together smoothly and prevents any pitting in the pipes from ripping
small grooves in the seal during the install process.

As Chris mentioned you can also go to the later model plastic filler
neck.  You would have to either change your tank since that filler neck
is much smaller (50mm vs 70mm) or find someone selling the filler neck
adapter seal which allows for the installation of the later model filler
neck into an earlier style tank.  I believe this seal is part number
251201139B.

Yes, I know the later years had that floaty-ball ball in there to stop this “defect” but I have the 83.5 with the foot wide filler tube that allows half the tank to slosh up it at every turn.
