Turn the radio up and let it go.  Nearly 20 years ago the dealer would not
PA Safety Inspect my 91 because of a PS leak at a boot.  I took it to a car
wash, spent 50 cents, washed off the grease and took it somewhere else and
got it inspected.  242K miles and still the original PS rack.  Just have to
add a little oil once in a blue moon.  As for the squeak, it is probably a
control arm busing and in the 30+ years that I've owned vanagons, I've
learned to live with the intermittent squeak.  I've got more things to do
than try to keep a 20+ old car from squeaking.  Heck, this 50+ body squeaks
more than the car.  Enjoy the car, enjoy the experience!

Hi all,

I just purchased my first vanagon - 85 Westfalia - that needs a little bit
of TLC.  The front end is squeaking a little bit when the steering wheel is
at certain angles and usually after the van has warmed up.
There is a little bit of, presumably, power steering fluid coming from a
cracked boot on the power steering rack.  Wondering if anybody had some
advice for me?
