2.1L waterboxers and many other engines have oil coolers or heat exchangers of some sort. 1.9L vanagons should have had them. So do many other VW-Audi engines.

Well, air-cooled engines have an oil cooler because they are technically oil-cooled according to my understanding. In that application, one could refer to the oil as "liquid coolant", eh?
