It is quite possibly just a weak connection in the dash wiring or the cluster itself. A sudden electrical surge can trigger the blinker circuit in the gauge. For example I have seen cases where each time the radiator fan kicked on the coolant gauge led would flash a few times. Also seen where turning on the headlights would cause a few blinks. These were on pre-86 vans, diesel and gas. The later wiring setup is more robust. None of these had anything to do with the coolant level sensor system itself.
