I blamed this on a fouled plug on my 356. My theory: The fan belt was trying to transfer the uneven rotation of the crankshaft to the cooling fan, whose rotational inertia would tend to resist this sever change. The pulley was the weakest link .

Luckily it never failed catastrophically.
