B-but since it ain't easy or inexpensive to pull the thermostat, do we /know/ that those things happen, and happen so badly that we risk a prematurely failed CAT or engine damage from them acids and moisture?

If someone can point to evidence I'll get the thermostat replaced soonest. Otherwise, not.
