Not an expert on this, but same thing happened to me a few years back.  Was bad starter; actually probably the solenoid within the starter.  Had it replaced, been fine since.  But List Wisdom has a recommended emergency procedure of smacking the starter several times with a chunk of wood or maybe even a rock.  I'm sure there is a technical reason for what's going on inside the solenoid that gets helped with a solid "twack", but like I said I'm no expert, have never done it myself, but remember reading about it on this List....so maybe worth a try to get you out of a bind (especially on a holiday weekend).

Oh yeah, when it happened to me the motor was hot; waited until the next morning to try to fix it.  So by now everything is cool, and started right up.  Got it replaced as soon as I got home a couple days later.

OK, I’ve willingly sat in shore traffic to make it to Cape May, NJ.  I turned the engine off at the camp office and 15 minutes later went back out and turned the key to find nothing.  I’d tried a few more times then waited a few minutes and it started.  This was the same symptoms I hade before replacing the ignition swtich.  It starts fine now.  Is it possible it’s the ignition switch again 2 years later or is there some “hot starter” issue that could be happening where it just did not want to turn over because its too hot?

Thanks, Bryan
