hi.. well that's interesting that external linkage was the cause. Nice to see your note on that.

I haven't seen that one either, ever, on any manual trans VW or Vanagon .. but ... I don't drive them with the linkage wonky for years either.. which I have to suspect that people do.

Because ...these kinds of serious failures have to give lots and lots of warning.. it's not like the shift linkage ( or say rear wheel bearings ) are fine one day, and the next day they blow out completely.

Likely there was months, even years in some cases, of obviously very not right symptoms.

When people drive things not working right ....it just causes more damage usually.. I suppose it's one thing if they know it's not right and choose to take their chances.. on the other hand, I get the impression that some people can't even tell when something isn't working right. And that leads to big expense .. or possibly near heart attacks.

a characteristic of german engineering is that it needs to *be* right to work right .. sure something will hang in there...but due to that basic characteristic, bad things can happen if operated in a worn state, I would have to say.

good to see your note .. and really ..if the shift linkage is not 'pretty decent' ....it just does more harm to not deal with it. Most of the time I just adjust and lubricate , and get them quite good.
