The rad on my '88 Westy is likely original, and has what I'd consider a normal amount of bugs etc. stuck to the front of it. Still, it seems pretty messy. My guess is that removing this debris should help the cooling system, but how much it helps, I don't know. Has anyone found that vacuuming away debris from the front face of radiator has *significantly* lowered their coolant temps? Before I got my new radiator and cooling hoses system and new professionally installed engine, I had mega heating problems. Once I put the new rad, etc... in I bought a "Bug Bra" aka piece of screen with 4 grommets and 4 small elastic extensions on "s" hooks. It gets covered in bugs and other parts of nature (just wiped off solid layer of white fluff) that would otherwise have been in/on the rad. I love it and easy to clean off with rag or whisk. Only use it when on road, don't feel I need in city. It's inexpensive and I can't remember where I got it (Princess Auto or Cdn Tire), about $15.00. I'd have to say that the total of what I've wiped off the screening would definitely have affected my new radiator. Easily made and not as heavy as the complete bra. Covers both rads with about 2" extra. Either going to get another or make one. I'd not leave home without it! Every Vanagon should have one, many have commented on it! DAIZEE |
