My Bentley is at the shop right now, but the main thing the 4-way switch does is change the power source to one that's always on, and hook the two sides of the car in parallel. May be a switch issue? Possibly a bent pin if you've had it unplugged? Hope this helps a bit. My article about circuit tracing at the vanagon wiki may help if you're having trouble following the circuits out. All switches are shown in their off or mechanically neutral position.
