I plan to clean the cluster contacts and the probe contacts later in the
week as a first step (and carry out David's suggested test of the gauge
response time.)


The problem was so infrequent and random if this works it will be a while
before I'll be sure the problem is gone.  I'll let people know whether or
not it seems fixed.
