Suggest as a first step you unplug the level controller and leave it out for a while. If the problem still happens, you've isolated it to the cluster/gauge area. I know it's a pain on the 1.9l but you can remove it from below, I believe. Takes some wiggling. Better to not disturb the cluster if possible.
