I hosted Dave for two nights and a day, and boy was that a good decision! Dave asked that I post an update to his travels - to indicate to the Volks in SLC, UT, that he is on his way, and to wonder if any other Volks on his route may be interested in hosting a wandering Volk?
I can highly recommend Dave as a visitor to your VW B&B. If you're getting your water well "re-piped" or your installing your 1.9L WBXR (now a 2.2L with the 2200cc GoWesty kit (in to a 1.9L case)) having Dave as a Volk with experience is quite valuable. We did both in a day.
I spoke with Dave last night (he left our home (Elgin, IL) yesterday morning at 7:30am). He spent the night in middle-Nebraska at a state park and is heading into the Colorado mountains today.
From the thread below, Dave is making the right to left journey of the country (with a reverse route in 3-4 weeks) with his brand new FAST motor (into an '87 Westy). This is the van with the baby-blue epoxy undercoat - wow! Talk about having protection! Oh yea, and a brand new paint job above.
I have Dave's cell number if you might be interested in meeting up or hosting Dave for a night in your driveway.

Hi All;What a great response from the list!Members have stepped up with stops in PA, IL, IA, Still waiting to hear from UT, a couple in CA and lunch in Phoenix. Steve even gave me info about Flying J travel stops. You folks are great. Anyone in the (slightly) northern mid west who wants a hello (and maybe a camper (me and the Westy) parked overnight in your driveway, drop me a p-mail. Thanks much! It is very reassuring knowing there are some Vanagon folks and stops on a cross country journey. With the new engine and upgrades on the Westy, I don't envision any problems, but one never knows, and a friendly driveway always exceeds a parking lot. Dave B.
