Although it is impossible to measure it costs more to operate on battery than it does on propane. In fact if you live in a land of high electric rates such as Long Islan it may cost more to operate on 110 than propane. The absorption fridge is a heat operated device that works most efficiently with a flame. If you want to run on electric get a mechanical (compressor) fridge.

For the most part I use the 12 volt during long drives where I plan to make multiple stops for fuel. Not a good idea to get fuel with a flame present! Otherwise I just use the propane unless I'm in a campground with electric.

12 volt fridge operation?

The short answer is just don't bother with it- propane is your friend. I'm speaking from 17 years of experience with the thing. As others have pointed out, you want to stop for a meal or to sightsee every once in a while, and that box is about as good an insulator as window glass.
