Grab your injection pump sprocket ( engine off of course ) and try to wiggle it up and down. if it moves much at all, the bushings behind the shaft seal are worn.

Try this too ...shut it off, then listen with a listening tube to the front shaft seal .. you might hear gurgling or hissing there ..a sure sign air is leaking in there.

I treated a tired old pump on a 'yard dog running project 5 speed sunroof diesel vanagon ) with Sulfur Substitute since I had some old stuff around I picked up on sale somewhere. It seemed to help that seal. Generally ..when they leak they need resealing at least.
