Hi Ric, Like craig said, this just happened to me, and belts wouldn't last a minute on the pulley. I imagine it will be the same in your case. And if you lose a belt and don't notice the alternator light right away, you could overheat your engine and then you're risking damage. So I wouldn't drive until you've addressed the pulley situation completely. You probably already know this but if you buy an alternator it won't have the pulley on it so you need to find a pulley or a spare complete alternator. Closest advertised part I could find is in plymouth: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1257611 But I bet you'll be able to find something closer.
