If starting from never having worked on cars or tightened any hose clamp, there is a small learning curve ...mostly though ...you learn what is about right, at least for people with reasonable sense and smarts. > I would only use a qurater inch drive 6 mm socket ( or 7mm or 1/4 inch, whatever I am working in ) - and never just a screw driver. > > It is also very normal to check cooling system hose clamps once in a great while . Each van I see gets looked at their immediately - > and if it's original.......that area gets redone. > > And what I do not like about that type of clamp ...well, I suppose you can crimp it more to tighten it a bit after many years, but I don't feel as good about doing that as I do about replacing it with a really nice small german screw type hose clamp, or a side-screw band clamp, which I call 'real' fuel injection hose clamps., though I have never had a problem with useing good german ones with the slightly curled up edges. > > A hose clamp I defenitely don't use is the # 4 american small ones, with 1/4 inch drive hex nut ..they just cut into the hose. I generally don't use them anywhere at all on a vanagon. I have also seen super cheap ones from you-know-where that just won't take or hold any torque, they are so cheap.. > > it's all fun. I would also suggest that if someone shares some unoradox goofy thing they tried..and liked their result .......let's just let 'em have their fun and no need to get all serious about how that's not so smart. There are thousands, at least many hundreds of clever 'back yard' tricks I have that I hesitate to share ...because 'somebody' is always going to come down hard about how 'whatever' that is. Durn shame. It could be more fun and light on here in my perception. Yeah....I don't share clever tricks much anymore,m from hearing flak back, very effective inexpensive, clever tricks too. It really good be a more fun and helpful environment. I would well understand anyone getting off groups like this out of frustration. > > Heck, I know one guy ....an extremely competent professional vanagon tech, little touchy emotionally though ..last I heard he said 'I'm not on any groups now and I feel so free !" > and he was mainly trying to help people. Durn shame, as I said. > About clever oddball tricks - > I just go on what really works , for me. It's frustrating, let's say, to share something that I, or someone sharing, has done and gotten fine results, only to hear back flak about how it's not 'official' or whatever. Takes the fun out of it , ya know. > As always YMMV.
