TJ,
I am a Registered Importer with the DOT (NHTSA). No conjecture, no
guessing, just the facts... Any vehicle greater the 25 years old can be
imported without issue, they are exempt. Any vehicle greater than 21 years
old is exempt from EPA testing, but still needs to be certified by an RI as
meeting US safety standards.
Please feel free to pmail me with any questions.
Cheers,
Jeff

I have a question for those of you who import or have imported vehicles as
either a business or in the case of doing it more than one time for personal
use. I don't want to clog up a bunch of the list bandwidth as it's a fairly
simple question but being so basic, it will no doubt inspire a whole lot of
conjecture. That being the case, please Pmail me and we can discuss it.
Again, it's very basic question but I will be the first to admit; I myself
or people who know as much as I know about importing a vehicle, are
dangerous due to that limited knowledge. I'm Trying to avoid a whole bunch
of "locker room lawyer" responses or the classic, "My brother's, cousin's,
best friend's, third cousin's, little sister's boyfriend, *tried* to import
a vehicle from Outer Slobobia (Slob-bo-bia) once but...."
The question is (and I originally was NOT going to post it): After a
certain model year (i.e. The vehicle being "X" years old) can the vehicle be
imported as is, or does it have to also be modified (DOT & EPA) as a the
(same year/model/spec) U.S version would have to be? IF so, how old would
that vehicle have to be? State of possible import would be FL and they do
not have inspections there so no worries about the state level issues. The
vehicle in question is 22 years old.
My apologies to those who do importing as I've seen your contributions to
the list, but I don't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, let alone
your names.
Again, Pmail me to avoid one more never ending post on the list. I did
search but no such answer came out in dozens of posts based on "import"
Thanks,
TJ
