In another thread running here currently someone is discussing selling their 85 westy for somewhere around $10 K! Quite the spread in value, eh? You could prolly buy the Craig's List cheapie and sink a few grand into it, be pretty close to the other one and have a couple of years worth of travel money left over..Or configure it like the Seattle one and re-sell it at a nice profit.... with some reasonable amount of work...

On the other hand, comparing a nice westie at $10k to what is available in similar small campers in other brands....The westie is a deal for sure for someone looking for a done deal nice camper......

My 84 was 'similar' to the Penn. one...cheap, plain, passenger van. It did come with an excellent drive train however. I think I have another maybe $1500 in it, including my $300 used Westie interior and $600 more in my "new" engine that I didn't really need but wanted to play with... Mine ain't no pristine restored to showroom condition Westphalia Vanagon, but it works for me at around $3000 total investment. It camps well and runs great, isn't "Too Nice" to use, so I don't 'cringe' when my wet retreivers jump in and shake and I don't worry about stuffing wet sandy sailboards in or a few sheets of plywood....

If I lived a bit closer, I'd be tempted...They do come up around the west coast, too...but enthusiasts are starting to snap up the cheap once and re-sell em after working them back in shape...You gotta be quick around the NW when one comes up for little money.. Don Hanson
