Might find it interesting that there is such a thing as an electro-pheumatic throttle switch for waterboxer vanagons.

Instead of a mechanical switch reading throttle plate idle position .. this electro-pheumatic device reads when there is closed throttle, in terms of vacuum, or whatever it reads air-wise , and that would have to be a step forward from a mechanical idle switch.

Chris Corkin supplied it I think, with one of his engines. or just google it.
