Subject: The Road Trip Game, you can play at home...

For this game you need a Vanagon (this is the Vanagon list & Ben
keeps a close eye on me <g>).
Lets limit this trip to .... say no more than 1000 miles from where
you call home. At 18 mpg at $3.80/gal you'll need $390 for gas at
the most for the 2k miles r/t.
Where to go... This is the fun part! There are a lot of ways to
figure this but google works well, just pick a spot, find it & ask
for directions from where you are.
Let's see, it's 841 miles to my son, his lovely wife and my
granddaughter down in Santa Cruz, grandkids are ALWAYS worth the
trip. I don't do 12 & 14 drives in one sitting so well anymore so I'd
be sleeping in my VW at a rest area.
I have a large beach blanket, it's yellow and has palm trees on it. I
put snaps on the top and hang it just behind the front seats, it's my
'rest area' curtain. With that up and the regular curtains closed I sleep well.
There are still more options! Yosemite NP is only 858 miles from here
& just today on the Vanagon list I heard what I'd need to do to get
in with my Westy. It's been a long time since I saw Half Dome.
Maybe I really need to see the sun set into the Pacific from Venice,
CA? 1,097 miles, too far. Oh well, I didn't really want to go to LA anyway.
Plaskett Creek Campground, California 1, Big Sur, CA being only 929
miles is within reach. It's been many years since I looked for jade down there.
Yellowstone NP? Wow, google let me down, says it's can't tell me how far.
I have to 'click' on the marker and ask for directions "to there".
836 miles! I can go!
Yellowstone is neat, I've been there a few times but I am not a fan
of the officialdom there so I won't, but I could!
The Grand Canyon? That's a place that's always worth the trip! Darn,
at 1441 miles it's out of the game, even the north rim at 1280 miles
is still too far.
I was thinking about Glacier NP (Montana) for a trip this summer
before things changed. At 680 miles it's in the game.
Just for the heck of it... Fairbanks, AK? I can't get google to
ignore the ferry but even then it's 1800+ miles so I'd guess that's
out. Las Vegas, NV? 1103 miles...
It doesn't have to be 1,000 miles either.
Nehalem Bay, Oregon is only 155 miles away. Oregon has great state
parks, great beaches and I'm always up to a stop at the Tillamook
Cheese factory and a chance to buy some Habanaro Pepper Cheese. Fort
Stevens at the NW corner of Oregon is only 120 miles away & that's
less than a tank of gas (r/t!).
Road trips & Vanagon's just seem to go together.
Play the game, where would you go?
