Subject: Gas Tank Fix - Update - Video
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"

Some of you will remember I did an R&R of the gas tank a few months back to 1) get rid of the gas smell and 2) stop the big overflows when filling up. The last time I went in I replaced the grommets again and the fuel lines and clamps. I found a HUGE tear in one of the hoses so I was pretty confident that I had fixed it. What I did not know was that the connector off the tank on the right side was this big collection of cobbled parts and not the correct crossover connector. Anyway, after seeing the correct crossover tube on the web I drove to Bus Depot after work Thurs to puck up a new crossover tube too as I had planned on doing the job Friday and only decided on the new tube Thurs. What I did not realize is the connecter on the cobbled side was slightly smaller. That’s not good.

The tank came out in record time as now it’s almost routine....

There are 3 things that I observed this time. 1) the of the drivers side expansion tank had it’s lid off. That is a good place where “lingering” smells come from. I glued that back on. 2) I used the new (though expensive) crossover tube. and 3) I played with pushing the newer style filler tube into the tank a bit and saw that if I pushed too the adapting grommet would buckle a bit. I experimented to figure out the right pressure to put the hose in and not buckle. After that I filled up. No smell at all. Yesterday when I walked out to the van it was the first time in years I was not greeted with that “slight whiff” of gas.

A new fuel filter is sitting on the counter at a local FLAPS waiting for me to pick it up.

The very choppy video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4X99U2wS_U&list=UUFrd4D9N1PGrHD7WbBRyyCg&index=1&feature=plcp . The first part was filmed when I did the first R&R and the last few shots were from this past Friday.

Thanks, Bryan
