a few reasons:

- found the material at scrapyard, so inexpensive - I'm not rock crawling so ultimate strength not needed - it is much easier for me to cut and shape Al rather than steel - doesn't rust - lighter than same gauge steel (steel plate could be much thinner though) - I like aluminium
