My view - get the 8mm BMW hose made for fuel from Van-cafe, install it and leave those hose covers off. DO NOT depend on that stuff to protect the fuel lines. There is nothing in the world like an inspection once a month to check for rubbing, chafing, etc, and a visual check for leaks etc. It only takes a few minutes. Just be sure and do it on a regular schedule. That is what I do. Don't do like most American drivers - just forget about it, hop in and drive. Very dangerous in a Vanagon.
