On the 'other side' of the firewall from the engine compartment, where your metal firewall fitting is .. on that back side, if it's like all other vanagons I've seen, there is a short hose, about 2 inches long. At the forward end of that hose, where it is clamped by a crimp type small hose clamp originally, that is The Spot that leaks. If there is a screw type hose clamp there it's probably ok. if original crimp type...that's where they leak.
