Nothing dumb, other than using a highly flammable liquid/vapor to check for vacuum leaks. All it takes is one ignition source and vwooom!

Saw it for myself back when I was a lowly mechanic at a VW shop in Leucadia, CA. Spray... Spray... Vwooom... Look Ma, no eyebrows.

Laughed till I cried... Especially since it was the service writer!

A "million" times Scott? If you did it 10 times a day, it would take you 270+ years to do a million times ;-)
