Subject: Was: CO..... Setting. Now: Engine Bucking Issue Solved?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi all.

The clip that holds the accelerator cable to bracket on transmission, was missing. I made one, it seems to help.

Would a missing clip allow the accelerator cable to move back and forth in the bracket and negatively affect the throttle valve switch operation?

New clip installed, it doesn't seem to buck when decelerating. It surges sometimes when accelerating from low RPM, say in 2nd gear, but I'm testing the van using abnormal driving techniques.

Hope this $0.10 part solves the problem!

Neil.

Extra reading:

I wondered all along if the accelerator cable was being pushed/pulled due to worn engine or transmission mounts thus causing the throttle valve switch to open when decelerating.

This Vanagon was sold to me as a relatively low mileage vehicle (~ 85K miles) so I assumed the engine or transmission had never been removed. I doubt the accelerator cable has been replaced as the rubber boot is torn. Can't see another reason for that cable clip to be missing.

On my '81, after swapping in the Jetta engine I had a similar surge issue; surging at low speeds (parking lot speed) I had mounted the accelerator cable to the firewall. Mounting it to the drivetrain cured that issue. I had similar thoughts towards the minor surging or bucking on my '88 but had assumed everything was OEM, stock, not molested.
