I'm not a chemist so I'm not sure how this applies but keep in mind that the "Fuel" that we burn in our ICEs is not

just Gasoline, it is a mixture of Air & Gasoline which under ideal conditions is 14.7 to 1, so for every 1lb of Gasoline there

would also 14.7lbs of Air bring burned.

The term Air-Fuel Mixture has always bugged me ~ should be Air- Gasoline Mixture.
