Is your engine set up anything like the older 1.6 NA diesels?

I faced a similar problem with my 81 Rabbit Diesel. My water pump (accessory belt driven like you are talking about) was leaking but I didn't want to mess with the timing belt (on that same notion, I didn't want to remove the injection pump as the Bentley suggested) so I removed the alternator-A/C compressor and their brackets but to get to the water pump bolts I had to get a "S-shaped wrench" to get behind the injection pump to the bolts. I'm guessing it would have taken just as much time to remove the injection pump and re-do the timing so I was happy with what I did.

Hope this helps. From what I understand, it is a time consuming job regardless of which way you do it.
