Subject: The saga of Franken AC
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed
I have a customer here with a 85 Westy. I just got done rebuilding an
engine for him and he now wants the AC working. He said there was a
problem with the fan in the rear housing and boy was he right. I went
to turn it on and it sounded like two cats fighting to the death. I
dropped the housing to take a look and was depressed because the cheesy
plastic cover is what the single fan with two squirrel cages is mounted
to. If this plastic sags at all the fans can hit the bottom of the
cabinet and then the squirrel cages can get damaged. That is what
happened in this case.
That brought me to the point to try an idea I have had for a long time.
How hard would it be to modify a late model Vanagon GL overhead rear AC
fans into an early Westy rear AC cabinet? That is what I have been
working on today and so far so good. I have pictures on my Van-Again
facebook page if you want to take a look at the progress so far. The
fans will fit, you just need to cut down the housing quite a bit.
Tomorrow I am going to work on wiring it up using the two large resistor
packs instead of the single one that the early system uses. I am also
going to install two fan speed relays and a 50 amp fuse. I think it is
going to turn out great! I'll let you know how I make out. I will be
updating Facebook as I go if you want to watch there.
