If the numbers appear then the front polarizer is damaged. In that case you could put a piece of polarizing material over the front from another LCD display, but a clock from a Jetta is probably easier. If someone has disassembled the clock they may have put the polarizers in wrong or left one out - I think in that clock they're separate pieces, not stuck to the glass of the display itself.
