Hi Martin, does it viually look like a possibly original brake master cylinder ? I find those in now 30 year old diesel vanagons fairly often.

typically ...it can be leaking between the two chambers in the MC. no fluid disappears, it's just that pressure does not get generated where it should.

or it could just be pumping in air.

Aalternator - whenever any belts are off anything, , spin by hand things that turn .. and check for excessive end play and roughness in the bearings.

I have found about fifty 90 amp Bosch alternators in service, on vanagons, with lots of bearing play or roughness . . Not that uncommon, and easy to catch before failure if you check things at every opportunity, like when things are being worked on.

also ...do this ..it's a good trick ..get something like a very long screw driver.. I use a two foot long hardwood stick.. put one end on anything ...injector, alternator, injector line ..whatever.. the other end against the flap of your ear, and listen. You will hear all kinds of bearing noise and racket sometimes.

You're a brave man .. family in a 30 year old diesel vanagon .. At least your engine is newer than that.

have a safe and rewarding trip ! I'm sure there will be other installments.
