Yes is the short answer. Anything that fits is what I keep in there, such as my collection of long cable ties, and a folding entrenching tool also goes there.

I also have lots of little/low stuff in storage behind the evaporator's air intake- breaker bar & socket, Sven Saw, Y adapter for outside faucet, marshmallow forks, yada yada, all of which fits inside the tray and don't interfere with air flow.
