'84 WBXR Manual, 2.2 GoWesty kit in a 1.9L case

Last night I set the timing to about 35 degrees ATDC (white mark 2" clockwise from from the U on the second pulley - Tencent"s recommendation on Samba; line it up at 3500 rpm, everything still connected).

Tonight I drove five miles in to town for fuel (Shell premium). After the fill-up, I turned the key, the motor turned over but wouldn't start, even with a little pedal action. Then I flipped the lid, loosened the distributor and turned it counter-clockwise about 10 degrees. The motor started after a bit of turning over.

I offer this observation/action in hopes of any comments that people far more experienced may offer on this. I will note that my idle seems on the low side right now, and I'm trying to figure out how, on a 1.9, to adjust the idle up. I loosened the screw a few turns without any change in idle speed. I think that I need to first tighten up the accelerator cable to achieve just zero clearance at the screw, then adjust as needed. As is right now, when I loosen the screw three turns it still rests on the metal strip.
