I have done something like this (a few times until I got it right) and mine has been working well for a couple of years and a couple of thousand miles since completion. My fix basically involved knurling the shaft where the infamous "metal gear" resides.  '87 Westy also.

My '87 Westy Odometer has finally succumbed to 'Vanagon Odo Syndrome'
- no more logging of miles (both main & trip odos) although the speedometer still works fine 
Can someone please point me to a good repair description (I'm only able to find lots of bits & pieces in the archives)
