I haven't done this yet, but planning to. Since I was an aircraft mechanic and pilot at one time, I was thinking about following the principle in Aviation - that is keep an airframe(Vanagon body with all it's attached parts) and engine(1.9L or 2.1L WBX including the tranny's) log books. Each airplane has one of each and both the mechanic and the pilot make entries into both. I plan to keep them in the glove box for convenience, and every time there is any maintenance on the body or the engine/tranny - it gets recorded in the appropriate log. This gives a running record of everything that's done. ON airplanes the maintenance recording are recorded in hours of operating time. In the Vanagon the mileage at the time of maintenance and the date would be recorded.

Spreadsheets are good, but not as handy as a logbook in the glove box. There is good reason to keep spreadsheets as supplemental records however.
