My grandfather used to own a campsite down on the Cowlitz River, from which we used to fish for salmon year round. In the Summertime he used to cut the fillets out and then hang the remaining carcass over a bucket half-filled with water and a dab of olive oil. The yellow jackets and hornets would gorge themselves and then be unable to fly, and would inevitably fall into the brink. It was a very effective measure to keep them focused on something other than us.
