The front is long because it is designed to lay up against the window glass. That means you have to push it up on the dash, behind (or is that in front of?) the steering wheel and the dancing hula girl. Elastic goes across the front, flat portion across each door. Should reach from door post to door post, snapping at each corner pillar and three across the front just above the windshield.
