On the Vanagon, it is really common to fail your smog test on O2 due to a
leak in the exhaust that sucks O2 into the exhaust (and out the tail pipe).
It doesn't take much of a leak to exceed the 8% limit. Usually the leak is
at junction of the header pipes and the cast iron manifold.

O2 is a mixture issue. HC is fuel that never burned. NOX is the result of
too much heat and pressure and reduction equipment not working.

Both have the same idle test, but I think the 2500 rpm standing test is a
little easier than the dyno test.
There are two areas where vans tend to fail: NOX, and O2 at idle. NOX is a
bad cat. O2 at idle tends to be an exhaust leak or misfire.
Cheers,
Jeff

Regarding the emissions test: As a matter of curiosity which is easier to
pass, dyno or idle/2500 RPM?

The 86 and later vans were all 50 state versions. If all is well it will
pass. Being a Syncro they will only doe the idle and 2500 rpm test. No dyno.

I have a stock 1986 Syncro and I am wondering if it will or can be made to
pass the Cally emission test?
I don't live in Cally but might be soon.
TIA, David
