Most boats that do use propane...and they are few because their hull shape makes Propane dangerous on board...most boats have the propane isolated in a locker that is air tight (to the inside of the hull) and vented overboard. But if the stove or the heater ever somehow springs a leak, the gas will fill the hull because obviously there are no leaks to let that gas escape to the atmosphere until it fills up to the lowest porthole or hatch. Not such a big danger when the boat is underway because there is air circulation below..but when the boat is in in's slip in the marina and all secured...the propane can 'pool' in the bilges and the lower portions of the cabin and cause big boom.
