There are six legs, right? And the outer pair are longer and have little notches that engage in holes in the stovetop? If so, cut off those two and use strong springs instead to pull the grate down onto the other four legs; and keep a set of four small hardwood wedges to place as needed under those legs to level the grate. Or metal wedges, but hard maple is easier to cut. If you want really smooth action, use them in pairs with the inclined faces facing each other so that you slide the bottom one in and the upper one automagically rises. You'd need 3-4 pairs in that case.
