Regarding misfires, you can't track it down to a specific cylinder on a vanagon. You need a crank sensor for that. But yeah, you can troubleshoot an intermittent with a vantage, you just won't know where it is unless you hook up both scope channels and use one as a specific cylinder reference. Newer cars just plug into the DLC and the answer pops up on the screen.

If you can get this for a good price, go for it. Worth it for the educational value.

And check out Paul Danner's channel on youtube. No affiliation, but I really find his videos informative. Here's a good one on o2 sensor response: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYMGnvtgi8w&list=FLbASXbIwIuUZReAM0Z4Mgaw&ind ex=20&feature=plpp_video

Well it IS all about impressing my friends. ;)

Yes. I get what you mean re: wave forms. e.g. if one doesn't understand that a properly functioning simple switch should show a proper square wave when switched on/off, then the tool is nearly useless to them.

The mechanic I spoke with said his version of Vantage had "tutorials" (my word) built in to the unit. He also mentioned that he had used his Vantage on an '84 to track down an intermittent miss so for pinpointing misfires, seems the version of Vantage he referred to was suitable for tracking misfire on a Digijet Vanagon.

I'll clarify with the mechanic what the actual model Vantage he was suggesting.

Thanks for the info Pat,

Neil.
